After much ado….(And the winner is, part 2)

No, not much ado about nothing. Not at all…. but perhaps I should start from the beginning.

This is Leanne.

She won first prize in last year’s Frocktober competition (Frocktober 2013, in support of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation). We scheduled a shoot for her early in 2014 and in between winning the comp and the scheduled shoot day, Leanne went back to work, and her gorgeous baby girl started child care.

And got sick.

And passed that illness on to Leanne, who passed it on to her husband…. and around and around it all went. If you are, or have been, a parent of young children in day care, then you know how it goes.

As a result, our session was delayed a few times. And then MY child got really sick, and so it was delayed a little longer….. until one lovely sunny day, it finally all came together!

And this is the result.

And here is the dress with a story behind it that won Leanne the competition.

It’s a simple little black shift that Leanne has worn over and over again. You know the kind… the one you throw over your swimsuit at the beach, the one you can pair with a cute pair of shoes and a great tote bag and wear to the park with the kids, the one you can add some bling to and wear to a casual gathering with friends and the one, as Leanne found out, that you can suddenly throw on when you’re in labour and you realise that you have planned everything else except what you are going to wear!!

Would you like a chance to win a photo shoot just like Leanne did? Did you know that there is an even bigger and better competition for Frocktober this year? You didn’t? Well now you do. There’s a photo shoot with me, a new hairstyle with Marie-France Group and two hours with a personal stylist up for grabs.  Here’s the entry form, but be quick! Entries close midnight Monday 8th September 2014.

How to lose 10 kg in a day

Let’s just get something straight right from the start. I’m not advocating rapid weight loss here. But that title got you in, didn’t it? 😉

I’m writing because people often look at my work and make a few assumptions:

1. Gosh! She looks incredible! You must have a fabulous hair and makeup artist!

Yes, I do! I have several, in fact. And they all do a wonderful job. I couldn’t create the images I do without them. They take a person’s face and hair and transform them before my eyes every shoot we do, and I never tire of watching how cleverly they accentuate beautiful eyes and add shape to faces in all the right ways. I can’t do what they do, and I don’t think I want to learn to either. They do it so well, and together we make a good team.

2. Gosh! She looks incredible! You must do a lot of retouching!

Yes, I do! But probably not as much as you think I do. I correct colour, I remove lint from clothes and stray hairs from faces. I make skin glow a little and I make eyes shine. Sometimes I even slim an arm or remove a muffin top, but only occasionally. It is fairly gentle retouching, and not to the point where you’d notice unless you had the untouched and retouched images side by side.

3. Gosh! She looks incredible. You always shoot such beautiful women!

Yes, I do! All the women who come into my studio are beautiful, but they don’t necessarily think they are. And yet all we do here when you come in for a shoot it accentuate what’s already there. We don’t create something out of nothing. We just show you how to make the most of the natural beauty that you have in you already.

Have a look at these photos. They are straight out of camera, no retouching. This woman has been through hair and makeup, and is looking gorgeous, and yet look at her first image. It’s not so flattering, is it?

And then, with a tiny amount of instruction, we get this:

Better, but not quite there yet.

More detailed instruction, and some changes in angle of view et voila!

THERE it is! Look at the difference! It’s not just hair and makeup that makes the transformation (though that’s a good first step). It’s knowing how to pose different body shapes, how to get the right hand placement, how to coach someone into holding their head in the right position so that their face looks good through the lens. It’s knowing how to help people relax during their session. It’s knowing how to manipulate light so that it is flattering to the face and the body. It’s all those things rolled together that create great images.

And the winner is…..(part 1)

To celebrate Frocktober 2013, I teamed up with North Shore Mums to run a competition celebrating the fabulous dresses we have in our wardrobes and what they have meant to us. Below is the story of the runner up.
Enjoy!

Buying an expensive dress on a whim, without even trying it on is not something you would expect an accountant to do. But that’s exactly what one North Shore Mum did.

Meet Julie. She’s a chartered accountant who runs her own business on Sydney’s north shore.

One warm Spring day a couple of years ago, Julie and her friend found themselves watching a fashion parade at a fundraising event at the races when out came this gorgeous silk dress:

It swished up the catwalk on a teeny tiny size one model, and for Julie, it was a dress she just had to have. When she got home from the races that day, Julie went to work, only she wasn’t using her sleuthing skills to find every last cent for one of her client’s tax returns. Instead she went looking for that dress.  Success! She found a photo of something that she thought was the dress, sent it off to the boutique who had sponsored the fashion parade, and a few days later that very dress was hanging up in Julie’s home.

Now let’s just pause the story here: Most people would have written that the dress was hanging “in Julie’s wardrobe”. Why say “in Julie’s home”?

Here’s where the story gets interesting.

You see, Julie bought the dress a couple of sizes too small. It didn’t hang in her wardrobe, but rather in front of her treadmill, and fitting into that dress became the incentive for Julie’s training for the next two years.

And here she is, looking fabulous in the dress.

You’re probably thinking that Julie wore the dress to death once she fitted into it, but you’d be wrong. It was a splurge item, made of delicate silk, and Julie thought she would be devastated if she wore it and ruined it, so even though she could fit into the dress, it didn’t get much of an outing. Then came the work Christmas party, the perfect opportunity to wear a gorgeous dress! Julie pulled it out of her wardrobe, got herself all dressed up and swished out to the party, only to feel over dressed and two years out of fashion!

“It felt great to fit into it,” Julie says, “but I just didn’t want to wear it.”

And the moral to this story? “Life’s short, so don’t be precious. Just wear the damn dress!” says Julie.

Julie won second prize in the Frocktober competition 2013, which included a full couture photo shoot with me. Here are some other images from the session the session (which we held earlier this year).

It’s time to update your corporate portraits when… {Sydney corporate portrait photographer} » vividity blog - […] took the image on the left a few years ago. (You can read about that shoot here. It was a fun one!) Since then she’s not only significantly changed her hair colour, but her […]

Our House: the designer

If you’ve ever been for a photo shoot or an album design session at my place, you’ve probably spent the first 10 minutes or so of our time together talking about my house. Was it a renovation or did we build from scratch? Gosh, what a lovely view!, So what was it like when you moved in? Did you change much? Oh, I love your kitchen! Oh, I want your kitchen!

And my personal favourite to date: “Oh! I love the window in your bathroom so much! I just took a photo of it. Hope you don’t mind!”

And no, I don’t mind. Nor do I mind talking about the fabulous team of people who helped us transform our house into our home, and a fabulous place to live and work.

In fact, I’d love nothing better than to introduce you to them here on the blog. Firstly, meet Dean Maher of Design Confidential

Dean Maher: Architectural draftsman

How did you start in this field of architectural design, Dean?

I have always loved drawing. Not so much the swirly arty stuff, but drawing houses and buildings. Always, ever since I was a kid. And I’ve always loved plans. I used to go to open houses and display homes and just collect the floor plans. It was in high school, though, that I really got into it, in Tech Drawing. I was never one for doing lots of homework, but I always did my Tech Drawing homework, and I always did well in it. And I think that was because I was genuinely interested in the work. I just loved it!

When I left school I enrolled full time in a design course, but it wasn’t until I changed from fulltime study to part time study and full time work in an architectural firm that I really got a true appreciation for what I was learning in my course. It suddenly all fell into place, and I could see every day applications for the theory I was studying.

What do you love about your work?

I guess that it’s always more complicated than expected. Most of my clients are mum and dad clients, so it’s real families in real homes. And there are always lots of different constraints on each job. Sometimes it’s working within the constraints of an existing building, sometimes it’s having to create a home that meets a big list of requirements on a tight budget. Some jobs involve heritage listed buildings. That comes with a whole long list of constraints! But I guess it’s the challenges that have to be met each time that keep the job interesting and fresh. No two projects are ever the same.

Do you have any favourite projects?

Yes, I do have a few, and most of them are in West Pymble, actually. I think one of my favourites would have to be a house that we kept virtually the same from the street view, but we added a modern, light-filled pavilion at the rear of the house. So you enter through the original house and then as you walk through, the building just unfolds and opens up to this wonderful new space. The client said to me, “It’s like being on holidays every day! It’s always so light and bright.” They love it. And they’re right. If you get the light within a building right, then you feel happy. Great light makes a home a beautiful place to be.

So how do you get great light, Dean?

It’s the roof that controls the light, really. Get the roof right and you can keep out light and heat where you don’t want it, and let it in where you do want it. So the angles of the roof, the depth of the eaves and the height and placement of windows are crucial.

What would you say people don’t understand when it comes to designing houses and renovations?

I think people underestimate just how much time it all takes. It’s not just about drawing a few lines on a piece of paper, or like some people think, just punching some numbers into a drawing program and then it does all the work for you. It actually takes quite some time of working on a particular problem to come up with a good idea that is practical, addresses all the issues, and is aesthetically pleasing. And then after that there’s all the red-tape side of things….preparing drawings for submission to council (and each council has its own unique set of guidelines), plus you have to keep across all the changes that happen to regulations like the bushfire design regulations and so on.

Describe your ideal client.

Well I guess like all people who work with individual clients, it’s when the client and I are a bit like-minded that I enjoy my work the most. That doesn’t mean that I only work with clients who agree with me all the time! Not at all! But I guess if I had to describe my style, I wouldn’t be able to point at any one particular design style, but rather a style in the way I find solutions. Every project is unique, but I like to find neat, simple solutions that are modest and clever in the way they meet the needs given to me in the brief. It’s a kind of paired-back, clean approach to design, I guess, that comes out of collaborating with the client and working to meet needs and budgets at the same time.

Are there any magazines that you would recommend for people to look at when they’re thinking of building or renovating?

“Houses”. It’s fabulous! There’s not too much advertising in it, and it has really great pictures of probably four or five houses in each issue. I love it. Great ideas and inspiration in there.

So what would we find you doing when you’re not here?

Being a dad! I have two young boys, so it’s pretty full on in our house at times. They’re into soccer, and I help out with their teams a bit, too. Oh, and I’m into kick boxing.

Dean Maher - G’day Jen,
That draftsman bloke sounds awesome……I’m going to call him on Monday.

Seriously, that is really nice. I love your photos & the ‘conversation’. I’ll never look at my untidy stacks of books the same way again. I’d love to be able to use the portrait shots…..rather than my tired looking point’n’shoot timed selfies.
Thank you again.
All the best,
Dean

jen - Yeah, he’s a really nice guy. You’ll love him!

It’s always a pleasure to chat with you, Dean, and to combine it with opportunity to come photograph you and your space is even better. I’ll drop some files up to you soon.

Lots of love,
Jen.
